Shopping for just this dinner: about $39.37 in whole packs at Ontario average prices, pantry staples not counted. Planned with other dinners that share packs, it usually costs less.

Ingredients

  • 600 gLean ground beef
  • 4 medium yellowYellow potatoes, peeled and quartered
  • 2 mediumCarrots, diced
  • 200 gFrozen peas
  • 1 mediumYellow onions, diced
  • 70 mlTomato paste
  • 50 gSalted butter
  • 125 ml2% milk
  • 1 tbspOlive oil
  • 1 cloveGarlic, minced
  • 250 mlChicken broth (low sodium)
  • 1 tspSalt
  • 1 tspGround black pepper
  • 1 tspDried thyme

Method

  1. Place the 880 g peeled and quartered potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to medium and simmer until fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes well.⏱ 20 min timer in cook mode
  2. While potatoes cook, preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Heat 15 ml olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add the 250 g diced yellow onion and 160 g diced carrots, and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add the 600 g ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned and no longer pink, about 8 minutes. Drain any excess fat.⏱ 15 min timer in cook mode
  3. Stir in the 5 g minced garlic, 70 ml tomato paste, 2.5 g dried thyme, 6 g salt, and 2.5 g black pepper into the beef mixture. Cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Pour in the 250 ml chicken broth, bring to a simmer, and cook for 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly. Stir in the 200 g frozen peas.⏱ 5 min timer in cook mode
  4. Return the drained potatoes to their pot. Add 50 g of butter and 125 ml of milk. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Evenly spread the beef mixture in the bottom of the oven-safe skillet or transfer to a 9x13 inch baking dish. Carefully spread the mashed potatoes over the top of the beef mixture, ensuring it covers completely. You can create peaks with a fork for extra crispiness.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the mashed potato topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling. Use the longer time of 25 minutes for a deeper golden crust.⏱ 25 min timer in cook mode
  7. Remove the pie from the oven and let it stand for 5 minutes before serving to allow the filling to set.⏱ 5 min timer in cook mode
